Mask - 1985
Movie Review

Based on the life of Rocky Dennis, "Mask" tells the inspirational story of a young man who suffered from a disfiguring congenital condition. In a very moving way, the film also demonstrates the falsehood inherent in the world of appearances, and the true nature of prejudice. Academy Awards: Best Makeup. Based on the true story of Rocky Dennis, who was born with craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, a disease that causes calcium to accumulate in the skull and makes the head grow to twice the normal size. Despite his fatal disorder, the 16-year-old Rocky just wants to live a normal life with his mom and her biker-gang buddies. His optimistic and fun-loving outlook wins him many friends and supporters, including a beautiful blind girl who he meets while working at a summer camp. Before "Mask"'s release, director Peter Bogdanovich criticized his producers and Universal Studio for making changes in the film which he felt were detrimental to its overall quality, including the elimination of the Bruce Springsteen score. The real-life Rocky Dennis was apparently a huge Springsteen fan, but using Springsteen's songs would have been too costly for the low-budget production.
