Movie Review
As the fashion world gathers in France for the huge Pret-a-Porter (ready to wear) show, Robert Altman weaves their impossibly self-absorbed stories into a bright comic fabric in this biting satire. As in "Short Cuts," Altman traces a half dozen or more plots, bound in this case by a mystery involving the death of the much- hated head of the fashion council. A fashion leader dies, perhaps murdered, in the middle of the most important industry gathering of the year, creating chaos in the tightly knit, pretentious world of models, designers and journalists. His widow uses this opportunity to rekindle an old relationship. In the meantime, the dead man's mistress, a designer, is forced to sell out to a Texas boot tycoon, and, at the same time, realizes that fashion is more than just the clothes women wear when she stages an all-nude fashion show. |
