A Cher Memory...July 19th, 1999 Article and photographs by Roseangela Lefeuvre Let me start out by saying that seeing the wonderful 'Miss Cher' is an experience in any format; seeing her up-close and personal is an awesome adventure altogether. When I first heard that she was taking her Believe concert to the ACC in Toronto, I of course got tickets. Fortunately, I live here so when I heard that she was doing Live at Muchmusic hours before the concert, I went there too. I didn't get inside to see the actual interview (I can't even find out how you get in) but was in luck just the same... I arrived around 5:30 and the buzz could be heard from the nearby parking lot; fans crowded around 'the window' in hordes. First thing I thought was "Oh God, I should have been here hours ago." Cher wasn't there yet, but this gave me the edge on finding a good spot. I'd made it through fifty or so fans but had a few hundred yet to go for the front line. Because of Muchmusic's 'window' anyone can see the featured star as they come out to greet fans. My hand was cramping from holding the CD, the Sharpie and oh, my camera. I finally ordered my friend to hold on to the CD and pen while I kept camera ready.

When Cher finally came out for the first time after the start of the interview, everyone moved up closer, holding their cameras in the air to get clear shots. Others waved pictures, albums, posters and CDs. Some screamed her name, others yelled I love you, and so on. My heart raced somewhat as I tried to get some clear shots from a distance. I managed to get one decent one from afar.

Suddenly there was an opening (some people had left) and I got quite close to her as she autographed. This is the closest photo of her I managed.

I couldn't take my eyes off her; she really is very pretty. We know she's had work done but hey, she looks fab and wouldn't we all have 'work' done if we had her life? You go girl is all I want to say on that. She wore black slacks with comfortable shoes and a pearly white long sleeved top. She seems smaller in person; I think she's only about 5ft 6 or so. She also wore a red wig which looked great on her. She was very patient, polite and gracious to all of us. Her bodyguard looked like a tough guy with a really mean look on his face; he was ready for anyone who came too close; you can see him in some of the photos.

Cher went in after a few minutes and came back out about twenty minutes later. By this time, I was right underneath the window, and her.

She was presented a plaque for platinum sales for 'Believe' (can't remember for where exactly ) and I got some really closeup photos.

She actually smiled at me twice. I think I got her attention when I yelled "Cher, this is your biggest fan! Please smile for me!"

This time I didn't get her autograph but when she came out one last time, I handed her my CD booklet and she said "I don't have a pen!" I quickly handed her mine and said "Here! take mine!" and she did, and kept it too. The autographed CD is framed and on my office wall.

Around 8pm she left to do the concert, which is only about 5 minutes away from Muchmusic; she had just enough time to get ready and get on the stage by nine, after Cyndi Lauper opened for her. I missed Cyndi at this concert but caught up with her at the Farewell kick-off concert at the Air Canada Centre on June 14th.

The Believe concert was absolutely fabulous as were her costumes and stage design. She sang most of our old favorites, and I know she didn't lip-sync, at least to most songs. She looked and sounded awesome. She also sang songs from her Believe CD; I especially loved 'Dove L'amore' and the outfit was 'out of sight'. She opened with her favorite song 'Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' and boy, she's got one up on U2 on this one people.

One of the best days of my life. Great day! I'll never forget it.
